ART

I saw this quote that really spoke to me because I realized I agree with it in whole.
"I like art, and by art I mean music, poetry, sex, paintings, the human body, literature... All of this is art to me."
I think of myself as some one who is interested in and appreciates art but to other people that translates as "Oh she likes paintings". But it's not really paintings, I love poetry, the human body, sexuality, places, drugs, taboo topics, music just really everything from an older time to what's trendy today. I think people today need to expand their mind and realize that art isn't just physical drawings. Art comes in many forms, I believe art is the way you dress, the way you carry yourself, the things you say, music, books, anything used to express feelings or a certain culture. That's why I named my blog artistic-soul-ebooks because I really enjoy all these different forms of art and I don't want to just limit myself to drawings or poetry. Art is everything, life imitates art. I believe we should all step back sometimes and capture the beauty of life and what is around us and how many different ways we can express ourselves. Oscar Wilde expanded on this topic in his essay 'The Decay Of Lying' Anti-mimesis is a philosophical position that holds the direct opposite of Aristotelian mimesis. Its most notable proponent is Oscar Wilde, who opined in his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying that, "Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life". In the essay, written as a Platonic dialogue, Wilde holds that anti-mimesis "results not merely from Life's imitative instinct, but from the fact that the self-conscious aim of Life is to find expression, and that Art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realise that energy."
The philosophy holds that art sets the aesthetic principles by which people perceive life, and does not imitate life. What is found in life and nature is not what is really there, but is that which artists have taught people to find there, through art. As in an example posited by Wilde, although there has been fog in London for centuries, one notices the beauty and wonder of the fog because "poets and painters have taught the loveliness of such effects...They did not exist till Art had invented them."
My personal favorite art forms are poetry and cinematic art. I really like vintage clips and music videos. I'll post some below, But to whoever is reading this I encourage you next time you're walking around just look  around, listen to your music, read your books, look at social culture, and realize how artistic everything is.

West Coast

So last week the magnificent Lana Del Rey released her new single from her coming album "Ultraviolence". The single is called "West Coast". West Coast has this beautiful slow drugged out melody with her singing in almost a sensual whisper. It just makes me want to sway my hips while wearing a sundress in summer while smoking a cigarette. West Coast is about a lover from California and how the being in that area gives a certain feeling of how anything could happen. Lana talks about seeing her lover and being on a balcony and singing about being in love with him while observing him and his crazy personality. She goes on to describe what people on the West Coast's culture is like.
As with all Lana songs, the lyrics to “West Coast” are both incredibly specific and obstructively vague, and here their dreamlike quality complements the druggy instrumentation. It’s a logical evolution of her prior sound. Singing about leaving a lover for the Californian promise of fame, Lana sounds more sinister and sensual than ever. “West Coast” shares musical DNA with a lot of songs that qualify for the highest West Coast title of honor: low-rider oldie. Like Lana’s first breakout song, “Video Games,” it isn’t intended for raging at the clob. It’s meant for swaying on balconies, lounging in beds, and driving real slow. Here are some of the songs I thought about during my first few listens to “West Coast,” all of which got me even more excited about the prospect of Ultraviolence. (Says grantland.com)

Down on the West Coast, they got a sayin'
"If you're not drinkin', then you're not playin'"
But you've got the music
You've got the music in you, don't you?
Down on the West Coast, I get this feeling like
It all could happen that's why I'm leaving
You for the moment
You for the moment, Boy Blue, yeah you
You're flyin' high at the show, I'm feelin' hot to the touch
You say you'll miss me and I wanna say I'll miss you so much
Something keeps me real quiet, I'm alive I'm a lush
Your love, your love, your love
I can see my baby swingin'
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, Ooh baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swayin'
He's crazy y Cubano como yo my love
On the balcony and I'm saying
Move baby, move baby, I'm in love
Down on the West Coast, they got their icons
Their silver starlets, their Queens of Saigon
But you've got the music
You've got the music in you, don't you?
Down on the West Coast, they love their movies
Their golden gods and rock and roll groupies
And you've got the music
You've got the music in you, don't you?
You push it hard up all the way, I'm feeling hot and on fire
I guess that no one ever really made me feel I'm a child
Te deseo cariño, boy, it's you I desire
Your love, your love, your love
I can see my baby swingin'
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, Ooh baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swayin'
He's crazy y Cubano como yo my love
On the balcony and I'm saying
Move baby, move baby, I'm in love
I can see my baby swingin'
His Parliament's on fire and his hands are up
On the balcony and I'm singing
Ooh baby, Ooh baby, I'm in love
I can see my sweet boy swayin'
He's crazy y Cubano como yo my love
On the balcony and I'm saying
Move baby, move baby, I'm in love

I really enjoy the lyrics and melody the song offers and I reccommend you give it a listen. Here is the audio video:

How To and WHY You Should Clean Your MakeUp Brushes!

Hello darlings, Now I know I usually blog about art, music, or poetry BUT I felt like this is a topic which is necessary to know and that most girls skip out on doing because either they are not aware of the dangers or they just never thought about doing.

Did you know that your foundation brush picks up thousands of bacteria and dirt off your face daily? And if you don't fully clean your brush you are just re-applying that same dirt and bacteria over and over again which causes acne. Bristles that are caked with dust and product can dry out and become brittle, making them more abrasive to your skin.  Not only do you get your face filled with bacteria and dirt if you dip your brush into your expensive MAC or Sephora powder you're making the whole product dirty which can still be transferred to your face even after you decide to clean your brush. So I hope you now realize that cleaning your make up brushes is essential ladies.

Now you must be wondering, WELL HOW DO I CLEAN MY MAKEUP BRUSHES??!!!
Let me tell you, (This routine is from Michelle Phan, beauty guru)
You Need:
  • Basic dish soap (to disinfect and clean)
  • Extra virgin olive oil (to recondition the bristle hair after it’s stripped of oils and disinfected by the soap)
  • Dinner plate
  • A hanger
  • Chip clips
  • Brush guards
Steps:
  1. Pour the dish soap onto the plate – you don’t need too much
  2. Add a little bit of extra virgin olive oil. The ratio should be approximately 2 parts dish soap to 1 1/2 parts EVOO and should look something like this:
6255029386:Yahoo:photo

  1. Take your first brush and stir it up in the mixture in a circular motion (you should see some of the makeup start to come off in the mixture).
  2. Then wipe the brush pack and forth on your hand to release the makeup from the brush. This removes all the pigments and kills the bacteria.
  3. When you’re done, place the brush on a paper towel.
  4. Repeat steps 3-5 with the remainder of your brushes.
  5. Once you’ve cleaned all your brushes, you’ll need to rinse them off under warm water in the sink. Swirl the brush under the water into the palm of your hand to thoroughly clean it off. (NOTE: do not use hot water, the high temperature will damage your brushes)
  6. Continue to do so until the water is clear when you squeeze the brush.
  7. Once they are all rinsed clean, gently wipe them dry with a paper towel and blot out the excess water. (Regular paper towels work best because they will not leave lint on the brushes
Important Note: Do NOT let your brushes dry standing up with the bristles facing upwards – this will ruin them!! Water will drip down the bristles into the brush and loosen the glue holding the hairs together. Eventually, the hairs will fall out and the handle will be ruined too.

When I dry my brushes I just put them bristles down in a glass and they're dry by the next morning!

If you're more of a visual person, here's Michelle Phan's video showing you how to clean your brushes :)
If you can't view the video, here's a link to it.
I hope this post inspires you to start cleaning your make up brushes, your skin will thank you!

Lana Del Rey

Today I'm going to be writing about someone very influential in my life and that is singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey. I remember exactly how I first heard her music. It was the summer of 2012 and it was the fourth of July and I was just scrolling on YouTube looking for new videos to watch to pass the time and I came across a music video called "National Anthem" - Lana Del Rey ft. ASAP Rocky. I was familiar with ASAP Rocky but I had never heard of "Lana Del Rey" so I gave it a listen and literally fell in love with everything from the lyrics, to the images in the video and the melodies. After that I searched about Lana Del Rey and found myself mesmerized by her beautiful nostalgic melodies and lyrics. I also really enjoyed that before she was "Lana Del Rey", she published music under her birth name Elizabeth Grant, or Lizzie Grant. Her older music has a great contrast to what she has been putting out recently. She has over 200+ unreleased songs which vary in genre, sound and theme. So I'm never bored, and always find myself listening to something or the other of hers. If you aren't familiar with Lana Del Rey, let me hit you up with some background information. Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1986), known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer-songwriter . Del Rey started writing at the age of 18 and she signed her first recording contract with 5 Points Records in 2007, releasing her first digital album Lana Del Ray in January 2010. Del Rey bought herself out of the contract with 5 Points Records in April 2010. She signed a joint contract with Interscope, Polydor and Stranger Records in July 2011. Del Rey's music has been noted for its cinematic sound and its references to various aspects of pop culture, particularly that of the 1950s and 1960s Americana. The singer has described herself as a "self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra". Before signing to a major record label, Del Rey provided sole production of her music videos. Musically, she draws influence from what she deems to be the masters of each genre, including Elvis PresleyAmy WinehouseJanis JoplinNirvana, EminemBruce Springsteen, and Britney Spears, as well as from poetry and film noir. She gained lots of attention especially in the US after she released her single for the movie 'The Great Gatsby' called 'Young and Beautiful' which she wrote and sang by herself and created a music video for. Everything about Lana really inspires me from her looks, music, her fashion style, to her life story. What I get from her is the idea to make my life a work of art, my work of art and live how I want to disregarding others opinions. To live life fast while you're young and find your people and spend time living in youth and beauty because it doesn't last forever. I really admire the idea that she decided to go her own path and lived life on the run and just living in trailer homes with little money while she was young but doing what made her happy and living with her lover at the time. But then her life was turned around and she is this new and coming singer, but Lana isn't all about fame. She is a very humble person and doesn't let everything out with a huge bang like other artists; she truly has a passion for music and she doesn't care for critics. Her style of music is very unique and brings back sounds from the 50's and 60's while other artists focus on new sounds and styles she brings something back for us which is beautiful and nostalgic in it's own way. A lot of people say her music is 'sad' or 'sadcore' which I admit it is true she does have many songs with a darker filter but I guess I just have a taste for that, and you discover a different side of life, a deep and darker side. Along with her music, the music videos (which she makes by herself and adds a lot of vintage clips into) are absolutely phenomenal. I feel like every music video I watch of hers tells me a story. From her 10 minute mini movie/music video 'Ride' which tells a story of living fast and finding yourself on the open road to the 30 minute film 'Tropico' including her singles from the paradise album 'Gods and Monsters" "Body Electric" and "Bel Air" which tells an epic tale based on the Biblical story of sin and redemption. I really recommend listening to her music if you want to listen to music with deep lyrics, beautiful melodies, wild at heart with weird on top.
Here's a couple of quotes from Lana, the first one being my favorite <3
“I was always an unusual girl.
My mother told me I had a chameleon soul, no moral compass pointing due north, no fixed personality; just an inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as wavering as the ocean.”
― Lana Del Rey

“Live fast. Die young. Be wild. Have fun.”
― Lana Del Rey

"I used to wonder if it was God's plan that I should be alone for so much of my life. But I found peace. I found happiness within people and the world."-Lana Del Rey
“Who are you?
Are you in touch with all of your darkest fantasies?
Have you created a life for yourself where you can experience them?
I have. I am fucking crazy.
But I am free.”
 Lana Del Rey

Life Of A Rockstar, Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

Who is Kurt Cobain you might ask yourself? Well if you don't already know Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 –  April 5, 1994) was an American musician and artist. He was best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the grunge band Nirvana.

I chose to write about him today because I feel like he is the face of rock and roll, grunge, and alternative rock. Kurt Cobain was reserved and had some sort of a mysterious aspect about him but at the same time was all up in your face which really personifies the 1990's. He was the face of the rock scene in the 90's.

Cobain lived a troubled life, his parents divorced when was just 9 years old, he spent a lot of time moving about and at one time was homeless and lived under a bridge. When his father remarried, Cobain resented his stepmother Jenny and her two children. But these unlucky situations fired his desire to make music. A quote from Cobain himself "Thanks for the tragedy I need it for my art". At age 14 he was gifted a guitar from his uncle which gave him a way to express his great unhappiness with his life. As he got older Cobain began experimenting with drugs in his mid-teens, and he pushed himself farther away from his father

Cobain fell in love with punk rock. While hanging out at the Melvins' practice space, he met Krist Novoselic, a fellow devotee of punk rock. Cobain tried to convince Novoselic to form a band with him by lending him a copy of a home demo recorded by Cobain's earlier band, Fecal Matter. After months of asking, Novoselic finally agreed to join Cobain, forming the beginnings of Nirvana. (Wikipedia).

Courtney Love and Cobain met on January 12, 1990, in Portland's Satyricon nightclub, when they both still led ardent underground rock bands. Love made advances, but Cobain was evasive. Around the time of Nirvana's 1992 performance on Saturday Night Live, Love discovered that she was pregnant with Cobain's child. On February 24, 1992, a few days after the conclusion of Nirvana's Pacific Rim tour, Cobain and Love were married on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Love wore a satin and lace dress once owned by the actress Frances Farmer, and Cobain wore green pajamas, because he had been "too lazy to put on a tux". On August 18, 1992, the couple's daughter Frances Bean Cobain was born. (Wikipedia)

His first drug experience was with marijuana in 1980, at age 13. He regularly used the drug during adulthood. Cobain also had a period of consuming "notable" amounts of LSD, as observed by Tracy Marander, and was "really into getting fucked up: drugs, acid, any kind of drug", observed Krist Novoselic; Cobain was also prone to alcoholism and solvent abuse. Cobain's cousin Beverly, a nurse, claimed Cobain was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as a child, and bipolar disorder as an adult. She also brought attention to the history of suicide, mental illness and alcoholism in the Cobain family, noting two of her uncles who had committed suicide with guns. (Wikipedia)

On April 8, 1994, Cobain's body was discovered at his Lake Washington home by an electrician named Gary Smith who had arrived to install a security system. Apart from a minor amount of blood coming out of Cobain's ear, the electrician reported seeing no visible signs of trauma, and initially believed that Cobain was asleep until he saw the shotgun pointing at his chin. A note was found, addressed to Cobain's childhood imaginary friend "Boddah", that stated that Cobain had not "felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing . . . for too many years now". A high concentration of heroin and traces of diazepam were also found in his body. Cobain's body had been lying there for days; the coroner's report estimated Cobain to have died on April 5, 1994. A public vigil was held for Cobain on April 10, 1994, at a park at Seattle Center drawing approximately seven thousand mourners. (Wikipedia) Click here to access Cobain's suicide letter.

I feel like the reason why a lot of people liked Kurt was because he kept a lot private, he wasn't a fan of the media and never felt the need to explain himself. Unlike a lot of other rock stars who adore the media and lights that come with being famous. Kurt was a free spirit who was haunted by many demons inside of him. To many he was a beautiful person who left something for society to enjoy. He was sensitive and very creative and unique. He was an artist both visually and musically. His death left so many in devastation, but his legend lives on as he is the face of rock and roll. "Cobain's death was equated by many who cared most deeply about what he represented as the death of possible cultural alternative that embraced a group of outcasts and perceived losers who didn't really have a voice," said Michael Lewis Goldberg, an associate professor at the University of Washington who teaches a course on pop culture that includes a segment on the Seattle scene. (SeattlePi). I hope this article gives you an insight to Kurt Cobain's life and I hope you find him as strange, interesting, beautiful, and inspiring as I do. Even I was not alive during his golden years during "Nirvana" or death but obviously his legacy he left is so immense it leaves an impact on the younger generations after his time. A person like him does not just reside in the 90's but their spirit lives on forever and continues to intrigue many generations.

Howl | Allen Ginsberg

I came across a poem that really sparked my interest. Howl, written by Allen Ginsberg in 1955. Ginsberg dedicated Howl to Carl Solomon, a writer he met during the eight months he spent at the Columbia Presbyterian Psychiatric Institute. Ginsberg had been deeply disturbed to learn that Solomon had undergone shock therapy to treat his depression. Ginsberg believed that madness was often mistakenly used by middle class society to explain genius or brilliance.

Here is an excerpt from 'Howl'

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving
hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry
fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the
starry dynamo in the machinery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the
supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of
cities contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and saw Mohammedan angels
staggering on tenement roofs illuminated,
who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes hallucinating Arkan-
sas and Blake-light tragedy among the scholars of war,
who were expelled from the academies for crazy & publishing obscene odes
on the windows of the skull,
who cowered in unshaven rooms in underwear, burning their money in
wastebaskets and listening to the Terror through the wall,
who got busted in their pubic beards returning through Laredo with a belt
of marijuana for New York,
who ate fire in paint hotels or drank turpentine in Paradise Alley, death, or
purgatoried their torsos night after night
with dreams, with drugs, with waking nightmares,"

I really admire this poem because Ginsberg refers to 'the best minds' not as college graduates, scholars, doctors or politicians but world travelers, bums, musicians, and poets. Essentially the idea of people who are sort of lost. “Dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix.” Angry fix being drugs to help the anger and frustration. Then Ginsberg calls them ‘angelheaded hipsters’ which to Ginsberg were religious figures that resemble angels. “Burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night” This idea of an ancient heavenly connection is religion, God, belonging. Finding the connection between man and God. Then Ginsberg goes on to explain them getting high and being under the hallucination of drugs and seeing angels. Then telling us how these ‘best minds’ got expelled from school for writing and drawing things on the walls which others viewed to be crazy. Then he goes on telling us these people spent most of their time spent up doing drugs and dreaming in cheap hotels. I think this poem really shows the point that sometimes the people who excel in school and life in society’s eyes aren’t always the smartest. Maybe it’s the people who seem crazy and burned out are the true brilliant people. I feel like the main message of the poem is that what’s crazy to one person isn’t crazy to someone else. Ginsberg's idea of normalcy were very different than what is mainstream. If people want to run around and do things out of the norm who are we to judge them and confine them to certain rules and regulations?
“Ginsberg wanted “Howl” to express the pent up frustration, artistic energy, and self-destruction of his generation, a generation that he felt was being suppressed by a dominant American culture that valued conformity over artistic license and opportunity.  For a poet or the individual to howl, meant that that person was breaking from the habit of conformity to the virtues and ideals of American civilization and expressing a counter-cultural vision of free expression” Says gradesaver.com I totally agree with this view and feel that’s what this poem is all about and that this is how the title 'Howl' is meant to correlate with the meaning.

"Young and Beautiful"

"Young and Beautiful" is a song written by singer Lana Del Rey for Baz Luhrmann's movie The Great Gatsby originally written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The lyrics of "Young and Beautiful" really capture Daisy's feelings and experiences when she was with Gatsby. "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" Del Rey adds a hint of desperation which parallels the idiosyncrasies faced by the characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. Del Rey's dreamy vocals are draped over sedated strings and canned percussion. The soft and dreary vocals, falling in line with Del Rey's retro affectation, fits the atmosphere of the 1920's when the novel is set. The lyrics rotate around the themes of pleasing a lover, nostalgia, and the gloom of aging. Young and Beautiful”, which is by far the most beautiful song on the soundtrack. That’s not something I ever envisaged myself saying about Lana Del Rey, but she has truly captured something extraordinary in this song. There is something in the nostalgic, affectionate, almost fearful refrain of “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” that evinces the devastating sadness of Gatsby and Daisy’s past love. It’s not just in the inevitable fading of youth and beauty, but also in the fading of an ideal. These characters no longer love one another so much as the idea of one another, and Del Rey’s evocation of rapture and precocious affection is heartbreaking. To watch the music video for "Young and Beautiful" click here. Here is the scene in "The Great Gatsby" where "Young and Beautiful" is played. Personally I think this song was perfect for the soundtrack and Lana Del Rey was sang the song beautifully giving it a sad and dreamy tune. Apparently the media the media thought so as well "Lana’s music has always had a cinematic quality, and this track’s certainly no exception: It’s haunting, romantic and emotionally devastating all at once. And of course, she’s still got her bad baby by her heavenly side: “Dear Lord, when I get to Heaven, please let me bring my man/When he comes, tell me that you’ll let him in,” Lana begs on the soaring bridge. “He’s my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds."  Says 'Muumuse.com'. Personally I agree with this website I don't think a better song or artist could have been picked to depict the emotions and desperation of Daisy on her and Gatsby's love.
